Oh man. I do not feel I should even have to say this, but since humanity is consistently both inhumane and stupid…

NO JIAN GHOMESHI-THEMED COSTUMES THIS HALLOWEEN, PLEASE. (Or ever, for that matter.)

Immediately after I tweeted this, someone sent me a link to an ACTUAL ARTICLE recommending folks skip the same old sheep or “sexy zombie” costumes this year and go as something more original, like, oh you know, a violent sadist who beats women in his spare time.

S

“Sure it’s a little hackneyed, opportunistic and perhaps in poor taste. But how often do you get to combine timeliness, pop culture, S&M and Canadian content in one getup? Plus it only requires a wig, swarthiness and a deep velvety voice creepily saying ‘Hi there’ repeatedly,” the author writes.

WHAT PLANET AM I LIVING ON??

The allegations against former CBC host, Jian Ghomeshi, just went public this week — and they keep coming. Tale after tale of horrific assaults committed against, now, nine women (undoubtedly many more will continue to surface in the days and weeks to come), detailed in an almost unbearable, but necessary way. But I just knew some douchebag would try to dress up as “Big Ears Teddy,” as Ghomeshi himself, or worse, one of his victims.

Please don’t.

These are real women. They were really punched, choked and assaulted in various ways. In their real lives. It isn’t a joke, it isn’t a costume, it isn’t some kind of cute pop culture reference.

It is truly beyond me that everyone isn’t in a constant state of nausea and disgust over this whole situation and that, beyond that, it would even occur to anyone to turn it into some kind of clever Halloween costume.

This isn’t a “too-soon” type situation. This is a never, ever type situation. It’s not just a matter of “poor taste,” it’s a matter of completely fucking unacceptable, cruel, and thoughtless.

If you need to be told that violence against women isn’t a joke or a costume, I wonder about your ability to empathize with other human beings in this world (and the state of humanity, in general, but that’s, like, just how I feel most days, really…) — but now at least you can’t pretend you weren’t told.

Don’t do it. Not now, not ever.
