I just got word via the Atlantic that the authors of the pamphlet titled “How To Protest Intelligently” have asked that it not be distributed through social media like Facebook and Twitter because of potential harm that might come down from the authorities getting their hands on it or a crack down on anyone who sends/receives it
Egyptian activists — it has since gone viral — have been circulated this 26-page plan called “How To Protest Intelligently” which reads as a how-to revolutionary guide regarding the uprising in Egypt.
According to the Atlantic, which is hosting part of the plan online, “While the plan itself contains specifics about what protesters might do, these excerpts show how one might equip oneself for clashes with riot police. Egyptian security forces have repeatedly beaten protesters as the level of violent repression of demonstrations has ratcheted upwards. For more context on the pamphlet itself, the Guardian UK ran a summary of it earlier today.”
“…the creators of the pamphlet explicitly asked that the pamphlet not be distributed on Twitter or Facebook.”
In fact, the warning on the first page of the Arabic-English pamphlet states: “Please distribute through email, printing and photocopies only. Twitter and Facebook are being monitored. Be careful to not let this fall into the hands of the police or state security.”
So feel free to read it, but please think twice before you share this over social media out of respect for the authors. Because, trust me, I’m all for Intelligent Activism! And I’m all against police informants or police collaboration when important activist info falls into the wrong hands — just putting that out there!
Think this doesn’t matter because you’re in Canada, well I don’t know where your friends live, or the friends of your friends live; but look up the word “viral” to find out how information spreads.
Thank you!
