In cities across Canada tonight and in December, there will events to express solidarity with the residents of Ferguson, MO as they cope with last night’s grand jury decision in which white police officer Darren Wilson was not indicted for the August death of an unarmed black man named Michael Brown.
The Grand Jury’s decision ignited protests in Ferguson, in which police used tear gas and violence to subdue protesters, arresting 61 people.
Activists soon began to march through the streets in several major U.S. cities such as New York, L.A., and Philadelphia, with social media protests adopting the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.
Canada, of course, has had notable incidents of police brutality toward Black and Indigenous people. This September, a black man from Brampton, Ont. named Jermaine Carby was fatally shot by Peel regional police.
