Dear rabble rousers,

We’re in the home stretch of our summer fundraiser and we need your help to reach our goal!

As the past year has demonstrated across the country, independent media is not immune from financial uncertainty. In 2022, Heritage Canada reported that more than 450 news outlets have closed since 2008, with over 60 of those closures occurring between 2020 and 2022 – and now, in 2024, those numbers have only worsened.

In the past two years: Bell Canada announced it was cutting 4,800 jobs and selling 45 of its 103 radio stations across Canada; it was revealed Postmedia would be laying off 11 per cent of its editorial staff; Quebec’s media giant TVA announced it was laying off roughly one-third of its workforce; and CBC revealed they would be cutting about about 10 per cent of its workforce. Just to name a few examples.

And with Meta’s ban on Canadian news content still in effect, Canadians’ access to legitimate journalism is further compromised. And so too is the revenue Canadian news organizations rely on created by social media traffic.

There’s no way around it: Canadian journalism is suffering.

This is what makes our fundraising efforts so important. We rely on the support from our readers, partners and monthly donors to be able to continue sharing the news that matters to you.

And so, with only a few days left to go, we could really use one more push from our readers all over Canada. Can you help rabble in the final days of our fundraiser?

Final days to enter our giveaway!

We are entering all new monthly donors (who sign up between June 19, 2024 and August 5, 2024) who contribute $10 or more a month into a draw to win one of three great prizes.

Those prizes are:

  • an original art piece by artist Beatrice Hawkins;
  • two annual tickets to the Art Gallery of Ontario
  • two season passes to The Ex

Become a monthly donor this weekend and be entered to win!

The way forward is with people like you, reading and chipping in to support non-profit progressive and independent media.

Thank you, as ever, for your support in rabble!

In solidarity,
Tali Zrehen, board member
