“It is no exaggeration to say that the hopes for a decent world rest substantially on the success of the kind of work that rabble.ca has been carrying out with such distinction and dedication.” – Noam Chomsky
Dear readers,
We are on the cusp of a new decade — one that many will agree is the pivotal decade for the future of this planet. We agree, and we hope you will support our efforts going into 2020.
rabble.ca has been reporting on news for the rest of us for going on two decades. We launched in the hopeful days of the growing anti-globalization movement — the early days of the internet — and we’ve been dedicated to documenting social movements and activist voices ever since. Our contributors and writers have reported on the shift to a new economy, in which our data is the currency of value and our ability to filter the real news from the manipulated makes it increasingly challenging to reach each other.
We’ve been the first to cover many social movements in Canada, from the Maple Spring, to Occupy, Idle No More, and Black Lives Matter. Now, our eyes are set on climate justice organizing, emerging youth-led movements, the critical importance of reconciliation for the country and planet, and resistance to neoliberalism.
Next year will be a critical year, and with your support we will continue to provide you with exclusive access to the coverage, debates and diverse voices that are missing in mainstream coverage. We have major plans for renewal at rabble.ca this year, including exciting news in the coming months about our website and the future of our storied archive of progressive social movements and labour movement history.
Our team of dedicated staff have been hard at work behind the scenes, and we are confident that rabble.ca will continue to be a strong independent voice, amplifying social movements and activism in a way that no other national media can.
But independent media is not inevitable. It takes your help. It takes you making a new year’s resolution to supporting media democracy. You’ve already supported rabble, whether as a reader, contributor or donor. For that, we thank you. We couldn’t have made it this far without you!
If you want rabble to keep fighting for social justice and if you feel strongly that rabble needs to grow, update our website, keep a watchful eye on federal politics, and cover the activists and groups fighting for social change and a green new economy across the country, then we urge you to join us and do your part. Make your contribution right now.
No amount is too big or too small for 2020. And if you donate now, you’ll be glad you did.
New monthly donors of $5 or more will receive a copy of Donald Gutstein’s The Big Stall: How Big Oil and Think Tanks are Blocking Action on Climate Change in Canada. And if you can support rabble.ca at $15/month or more, you can get a copy of either Linda McQuaig’s new book, The Sport and Prey of Capitalists: How the Rich are Stealing Canada’s Public Wealth, or one of a limited number of signed copies of Libby Davies’ Outside In: A Political Memoir.
Let’s make 2020 the best year yet together! We need your support to carry out this important work. Please donate before December 31 to carry us into the new decade. Your contributions will be gratefully and warmly received.
Best wishes to you for the new year,
Kim Elliott, publisher
