This April 28 will be the 25th anniversary for the National Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured on the job. Launched in Canada by the Canadian Labour Congress events recognizing this day now happen not only in communities across this country but in more than 100 countries around the world.
Mourn for the Dead. Fight for the Living. This is the slogan the labour movement has used around this day. We commemorate those who have died trying to earn a living and recommit to fight for better workplace health and safety legislation and strong enforcement by government. Across Canada workers die in ways more horrible than even Stephen King can imagine. Workers die because of toxic substances they are exposed to at work. Workers die because they are attacked at work. On average 1,000 men, women and teens each year.
Unions and their allies are committed to Fighting for the Living until we see the day where the blood of workers is no longer an ingredient in the goods and services they produce for our society.
