December 6 marks Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. The day of remembrance is the anniversary of the murders of 14 women at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal, also known as the Montréal Massacre. The victims were targeted because they were women. Vigils are held across the country and this day also serves as an opportunity for Canadians to reflect and mobilize against gender-based violence.
