Babble Book Club’s next selection is Things Fall Apart by acclaimed African novelist Chinua Achebe. Things Fall Apart describes the story of Okonkwo and his family and their struggle to preserve the customs and society of the Igbo amidst the pressure and influence of British colonialism and Christian missionaries during the late nineteenth century.
Things Fall Apart is a staple book in high schools and university English classes because of its unique voice and themes of reciprocal strength from community and the individual, the contrast of beliefs from cultures and perceived notion of superiority and inferiority and the idea of adaptation and flexibility within culture and individual response. Achebe’s discussion and portrayal of these complex issues catapulted him to literary fame and reverence and his books were widely published around the world in over 20 different languages.
With Achebe’s recent death, it has sparked a renewed interest in his writing, particularly with his most famous novel Things Fall Apart. Babble Book Club readers felt a proper way to mourn the passing of this great novelist was to read and discuss this book, either exposing to new readers or revisiting from previous readers.
The final discussion will take place on Friday May 17 2:00 p.m. EST in the babble book lounge on the established babble thread. As always, readers are welcomed to participate on the thread throughout the course of their read and contribute thoughts, comments and questions about any aspects of the book to fellow babblers.
