A third candidate has entered the race for the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) Presidency.
Hassan Yussuff, the current Secretary-Treasurer of the CLC, quietly kicked off his campaign Sunday night with a letter sent out to the CLC declaring his intention to run.
Though he has yet to announce his platform, Yussuff has already received the endorsement of the President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council, John Cartwright. He’s also caught the eye of several important labour leaders and thinkers.
See Cartwright’s endorsement here.
Yussuff has developed an impressive labour resume since immigrating to Canada from Guyana and finding work at a CanCar plant in Toronto. He rose through the ranks of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) while serving on a number of CLC committees. In 1999, he was the first person of colour to be elected to an executive position at the CLC. He has been Secretary-Treasurer since 2002, and is also the current President of the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA).
Yussuff will run against Ken Georgetti, who has been CLC president since 1999, and Hassan Husseini, who announced his candidacy in late March.
This is the first time Georgetti has had opposition for the presidency since 2005. The Presidential Election will take place during the CLC convention May 5 to May 9 in Montreal.
