Here at rabble.ca we strongly believe that Canada needs more independent reporting coming out of Parliament Hill. In 2011, frustrated with the coverage of Parliament and the Prime Minister’s office we crowd-funded a journalist to report on the Hill for the rest of us. A few organizations and our readers came through and we sent Karl Nerenberg to do the job. Each year now we turn to the community to keep Karl covering Parl (you can support right here). Why support Karl?
1. He’s no noob. Karl has got the experience. He has been a journalist for over 25 years, including eight years at the producer of the CBC show The House. He has written scripts for documentary films and long-form television reports for such shows as Le Point and Actuel on Radio Canada television and The Journal on CBC-TV. Karl also founded and, for five years, edited the magazine Federations: What’s new in federalism worldwide. He knows how to get the scoop.
2. He speaks the language (or more precisely the languages). Karl is fluent (and does work) in English and French. Plus after a few decades he can decipher political-speak very well.
3. He rocks. Don’t take our word for it. He has won a Gemini award, a Best International Documentary Series award (from “la communauté des televisions francophones”), a CBC Radio Award for Best New Series (C’est la vie), and recently was awarded the Canadian Ethnic Media Association Award for Best Television Documentary (2013) for Never Come Back, a film exploring the persecution of the Roma people in Eastern Europe and their struggles to be accepted as refugees in Canada.
4. Seems immune to writer’s block. Karl writes regularly and at length on the many important issues coming out of parliament. Each session he produces dozens and dozens of articles.
5. He will tread where others do not go. Sometimes Karl is the only journalist covering particular meetings or hearings. It may not be glamorous, but the story calls!
7. Donate to Karl and you can win a great prize. Everyone who donates at least $25 will be entered to win: A) one of 10 rabble tote bags B) one of 5 best of rabble book bundles C) the grand prize of the critically acclaimed Nexus 7 (16gb) tablet!
Bonus:
8. He plays a mean jazz piano. Plus every now and then he will write about jazz.
Please support Karl’s reporting today. You can do so right here. And see below to hear Karl discuss what it means to be a reporter “for the rest of us” on Parliament Hill.
