Canadian peace advocates expressed outrage at the Canadian government’s failure to condemn the illegal attacks on Iran by the US and Israel last week.

On the evening of June 23, President Trump posted on Truth Social announcing that a “complete and total” ceasefire had been agreed between Iran and Israel – putting a stop on the 12 day war between the two countries.

In the early hours of June 22, 2025, the United States directly entered the Israel-Iran conflict by launching airstrikes on key Iranian military and nuclear sites. These strikes targeted Iran’s air defense systems, radar arrays, and ballistic missile sites in coordination with Israeli intelligence.

There have been a diverse set of reactions to the United States’ shocking direct involvement in the war. Senator Tom Cotton and former VP Mike Pence hailed the strikes as a restoration of American strength. They argued that decisive military action was the only language Iran understands.

Prime Minister Carney put out a statement Sunday morning on X

Regarding the United States’ involvement in the war, Carney wrote,  “While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority.”

Progressive organisations across Canada have expressed their dissatisfaction with Carney’s statement, particularly due to him not condemning the United States’ bombing of Iran.

In an official statement, the New Democratic Party was quick to condemn the US’ actions as “illegal under both U.S. and international law,” calling for an immediate de-escalation of military action in the region.

The Director of Media Advocacy for Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East, Jason Toney, shared with rabble his sentiments on Carney’s statement.

“Mark Carney’s call for a future Palestinian state to be ‘Zionist’ is a step backwards. Such a statement is offensive to the principle of Palestinian self-determination and undermines Canada’s credibility as a fair or credible partner in any future peace process. It reflects his administration’s troubling disregard for Palestinian human rights and should concern all Canadians who support peace and justice in the region,” he said.

Similarly, Just Peace Advocates along with the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute said: “for many decades Israeli officials have claimed Iran is on the cusp of acquiring nuclear weapons and in recent months both US intelligence and the International Atomic Energy Agency have said there’s no evidence of this.

They added that, “additionally, it’s Donald Trump that ripped up the successful Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Iran nuclear agreement in 2018.”
