Election Night in Toronto – are you ready to party?
While Torontonians are not sure what the outcome to Monday night’s election will be – will people vote with their hearts on their sleeves, vote strategically or not vote at all? – one thing is for sure, there will be people celebrating.
Of course the most obvious cause for celebration will be those happy that Toronto’s humiliation might come to an end, since while Rob Ford might still retain his council seat in Ward 2 (Etobicoke North)even though doctors have estimated he faces a 50/50 chance to beating the rare form of cancer he is stricken with. His brother, Doug Ford, might be less lucky as he will end up with no seat at all, after the gambit of replacing his brother in running for mayor of Toronto.
But will Toronto be ready to party – either at the defeat of our commie, bike riding, pinko of a candidate in Olivia Chow, at the defeat of the Brothers Ford or Tory-I-can’t-seem-to-keep-my-mouth-shut-in-the-final-countdown?
If you’re in the mood to party. or drink your sorrows away, here’s the plan.
The good people at Newmindspace – which, yes, brought you such fun times as pillow fights on city streets – is planning to host a party in front of City Hall at 9:00 pm on election night. They believe that Ford will not win. I doubt anyone will be handing out fistfuls of crack to celebrate. Of course if the Brothers’ Ford even attend is up in the air. Which will be sad, because we all know how awesome Rob Ford’s dance moves are. But seriously, best of luck in beating down that cancer, sir.
The call out reads: “Whether you support Olivia Chow, John Tory, or Sketchy the Clown, one thing we can all be thankful for is that on the night of October 27th, the new mayor will not bear the Ford name.
Join us as we reflect on the last Ford years, rife with drama, intrigue, videotape, crime, drugs, murder and the daily circus that has sullied our “New York run by the Swiss” reputation. Celebrate with us a return to “business as usual, folks,” but actually this time. “
There, I am assuming they will have some way to track the election results as the numbers pour in, as hopefully more happy people pour into Nathan Phillips Square to celebrate; and maybe mourn a bit as I know the decision to put aside people’s morals and vote strategically is weighing heavily on people’s minds.
But hey, it’s only for four more years.
Party on, dudes and dudettes!
