Fetch stories, not coffee as a rabble editorial intern. Immerse yourself in the world of activism, news writing and editing! rabble.ca offers a supportive learning environment for emerging journalists and a chance to put your activist ethics and skills to work.

We’re currently seeking editorial interns for six-month internships at rabble. Further details about these part-time positions can be found at our opportunities page and below. We will be offering an honorarium for those who successfully complete the internships.

Internship 1: News writing and editing

The successful candidate will work one-on-one with rabble editors and participate in some of the daily tasks involved in producing the site. In addition, the candidate will be expected to pitch news stories, take regular news-writing assignments, assist with maintenance of our event listings page and work with the editor to prepare articles for publication. The news intern will also gain experience in research and fact-checking. Strong writing, editing and research skills are a must, as are an interest in current affairs and the ability to meet quick deadlines. You will have the opportunity to produce original feature and news material, learn and develop editing skills, and to work closely with a group of committed media producers and journalists at one of Canada’s most innovative media websites.

Time commitment required: 10 hours per week; location of supervising editor: Vancouver

Internship 2: rabble podcast network

If you are enthusiastic about audio, radio and podcast production, news and current affairs, and you want to be part of creating a stable, strong and independent media in Canada — well, you could be the next rpn intern!

As an intern at the rabble podcast network, you will work with the rpn’s executive producer mixing and hosting podcasts, scouting material and conceiving promotional ideas for the network.

You will have the opportunity to produce original material, learn audio editing skills (or hone the ones you have) and to work closely with a group of committed media producers and journalists at one of Canada’s most innovative media websites.

Your location is not important but your access to the Internet and ability to meet regularly by Skype, IM or telephone is essential.

Time commitment required: 10 hours per week; location of supervisor: Toronto

Internship 3: Blogging and books

The successful candidate for this unique position has an eye for sharp writing and a pretty good hold on it themselves. They have a lot of books for friends, particularly from Canadian authors and independent Canadian publishers. They carry a chip on their shoulder when it comes to stories on post-secondary education issues — labour, tuition, debt, teaching — and aren’t shy about chasing down elusive writers for loose change. They love independent media and want to make it better.

The position will focus on developing editorial and publishing skills under the co-supervision of rabble.ca’s Blogs Coordinator and Books Coordinator. You will have the opportunity to learn and participate in every aspect of a variety of editorial and publishing duties including: curating a blog on post-secondary education, tracking down potential reprints and enlisting writers for original articles; attending weekly story meetings with pitches in hand; proofreading submissions; organizing and moderating an online book club discussion; writing or assigning book reviews; proposing and completing your own project.

You will commit 10 hours per week, including bi-weekly check-ins with your main supervising staff member. Your main supervisor is based in Vancouver, but a versatile intern with experience working in a digital world can accomplish their duties from anywhere.

Internship 4: Activist toolkit

The activist toolkit is a dynamic place for community activists to share workshop designs, posters, flyers, online tools and ideas. By making these tools available, the activist toolkit inspires and supports the people involved in community work worldwide by developing leaderships and helping organizations grow.

This internship opportunity involves researching activist tools to help expand this long-anticipated section of rabble.ca, networking with social change organizations across Canada, moderating discussion on tools, as well as posting weekly blogs. Interns will learn social media skills, basic podcasting, and common workplace management tools. Experience isn’t as important as a proven commitment to social justice and meeting tight deadlines.

Through this internship are opportunities to connect with other folks in indie media and progressive organizations. A reference is guaranteed after successful completion of the internship.

Internship 5: Film Festivals in Toronto (FFIT) project

Do you love movies? Are you organized and detail-oriented? Do spreadsheets make you happy? Are your thumbs itching to tweet? rabble.ca’s Film Festivals in Toronto project highlights and celebrates the many film festivals in Toronto and we are seeking an intern to help develop this project. The FFIT project is a volunteer-run initiative from rabble staff and writers who have a thing for film.

This position involves a fair bit of administration (identifying festivals and films, locating reviewers, posting reviews, arranging for screenings and generally promoting the project). There will be opportunities in the position to review films and conduct interviews for rabble.ca. You will connect with a number of film festivals, have the opportunity to publish written and audio material, and develop social media and administration skills. This is an opportunity to have a strong role in guiding the future of this project.
