Support for Pride activist Barry Conway expressed through song
On June 15, 2019 the Hamilton LGBTQ2SI+ community gathered in Gage Park with their families to celebrate Pride. Members of the Proud Boys white supremacist group came to preach hate at the event.
Local activists raised a canvas barrier to protect Pride celebrants from the hateful signs and speeches. The white supremacists attacked as police stood by. When the police finally did intervene they arrested several of the Pride defenders. One of those arrested was Barry Conway, a union officer in the Hamilton city workers union. His trial for assault is on March 15, 2021.
Hamilton activist Cole Rockarts has recorded a song about Conway’s struggle for justice.
