Dear rabble readers,
Why do so many of us know so much about irrelevant news stories? I won’t get in the proverbial mud and slag our competitors in this fundraising appeal; however, as the publisher of rabble.ca, I appreciate how each story we share on rabble.ca is designed to inform our readers. As an independently operated, progressive news website, we have no shareholders squeezing us for profits, which allows us to serve readers the reliable content you’ve come to expect…
At many for-profit news outlets, the business model these days revolves around tricking users into spending time on their sites. Distracting stories about the antics and affairs of C-list celebrities may entertain readers in the moment, but they do not arm us with the facts we need to hold our leaders accountable. Occasionally, the front-page stories on for-profit sites provide no new information at all, but are purely a rehashing of comments Stephen Colbert made about Donald Trump on his show! I try not to be judgmental of journalists telling stories they need to write to retain their jobs; however, I am grateful for each substantive story our team tells…
This summer, we are raising money to ensure rabble.ca can continue our approach of eschewing clickbait in favour of covering the issues that truly make an impact. Creating independent Canadian news is an expensive endeavor. That’s why we appreciate each donation we receive, whether it’s a one-time donation for $5 or a commitment to donate $50 a month.
For those who have the means to become donors, rest assured every dollar you give strengthens our organization. We have so many stories we’re following right now, from what’s happening to labour rights in the wake of Trump’s erratic economic policies to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s sweeping mission to ban books in her province’s schools. The support of readers like you is the superpower that allows us to tell these stories with the rigor and detail you count on from rabble.ca.
In solidarity,
Sarah Sahagian, publisher
