Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated he will return to the bargaining table “when the Americans start being serious.” How much more serious can the Americans be? The Americans have been very serious right from the beginning of Trump’s second term. Trump has constantly repeated 51ST state, governor of Canada statements and now Lake America.

It is a big mistake to think it is just Trump who is the biggest threat. The US is now an oligarchy where wealth buys power and then power gains more wealth.

The biggest threat are Trump’s billionaire oligarch donors. US tech oligarchs have changed the name of Lake Ontario on their platforms to Lake America, showing how much power they have gained.

Trump’s tariffs are designed to do just one thing: remove the border between the US and Canada.

Henry Kissinger, the political scientist who served as the 56th US Secretary of State from 1973 to 1977 once said: “The US has no permanent friends and no permanent enemies it only has permanent interests.” Trump is just the current mouthpiece for those billionaire interests.

Those interests have been casting a covetous eye over Greenland, the Panama Canal and Canada. This is why Trump has been so relentless in pushing tariffs, so those billionaire interests can gain sovereignty and control over our country. It is a return to Manifest Destiny, where the US believed that the United States was divinely ordained to expand its borders to all of North America because the American way of life was superior. US democracy once protected us from any such actions, but no more.

US democracy is being dismantled by a group of billionaire oligarchs, conservative ideologues and Christian nationalists who aim to permanently change the US in their interests. Those interests include taking over Canada and our resources.

Tariffs are a wealth machine for Trump’s billionaire donors.

Wilbur Ross, the steel magnate who ran the US Commerce Department, has been candid that tariffs serve a two for one purpose: squeeze trading partners and raise cash to fund fresh tax cuts. In practice it is a loop, transfer revenue from every importer to the Treasury, then channel the savings back to the same shareholder class through the tax code.

Trump’s rhetoric justifying tariffs is often appealing to the working class however, the material benefits only flow upward.

What is presented as a policy of national security is just a method of redistributing economic advantage toward the wealthiest.

If your factory sits in the right district, you are suddenly indispensable at budget and election time. Add it up and the tariff regime looks less like border security than a tailored surtax on everyone else’s supply chain. Tariff money is then

re- routed to a small circle of domestic balance sheets; all aimed at Trump’s billionaire donors.

Alberta Premier Daniele Smith and her oil oligarch donors’ scheme to separate Alberta from Canada is further fueling Trump’s scheme to annex Canada. Carney needs to denounce them soundly and do everything possible to stop them.

Trump and his band of billionaire oligarchs are a very serious existential threat to Canada. Those oligarchs want our oil, gas, rare earth minerals and water. Now we are in a merry go round of tariffs and counter tariffs.

The Americans are very serious. If we are to survive this attack, we must get serious ourselves.

No purchase of F35 jets, no electricity and no potash south. Export taxes will just make Trump implement higher and higher counter tariffs and then what?

Time to get serious and drop the gloves. It couldn’t be clearer.
