Dmytri Kleiner, author of the Telekommunist Manifesto, offers us this new spin on the old Christmas game of “Secret Santa.”
Inspired by the Tor Project (The Onion Router) for anonymizing web surfing, the “Crypto Santa” game provides us with a way to further anonymize our Secret Santa gift-giving at our own holiday gatherings of friends, co-workers or family members.
Instead of wrapping your Secret Santa gift once, you wrap it several times. Each time you add a layer of wrapping you address it via another person so that the gift travels through a number of hands such that the eventual recipient has absolutely no idea who the gift came from!
The idea behind the game is to help people learn a little bit about how Internet privacy tools like the Tor Project work and to (hopefully) discuss privacy issues and what can be done about them.
Having just seen Citizen Four, the documentary film about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, this is a discussion that’s well worth having as we are surveilled into 2015.
