Dear readers,

Thank you for reading and watching and listening and discussing at rabble.ca!

We’re now over the halfway mark for our 2018 fundraiser, and friends have chipped in from all over the country. We’ve raised over $20,000 from readers so far! But we still need your help to take it even further and meet our goal of $50,000. In the last few years, readers like you have put us at the $50K mark and we need your help again. If every reader chipped in just $1/month, we would meet — and far exceed! — this goal.

We truly believe — and suspect you do, too — that an independent non-profit model is the future of independent media — where rabble is reader-funded and beholden to only you, our community members and readers all over Canada.

Visitor- or community-supported media goes way back. Public radio and TV have depended on viewers and listeners for decades, and outlets like rabble.ca have been reader-sustained since day one. More and more media sites are moving away from advertising and turning to their visitors. It was heartening to see The Guardian recently announce it has reached over a million people a year who support the site. This level of community and reader support has given new life to The Guardian — and shows, again, the power of community support to sustain indie media.

Now, we know that we’re nowhere near as large as The Guardian, but even though our budget is a fraction of theirs, we still reach 200,000 of you each month. The facts are clear: community-supported media is the future. The good news is that we have a strong foundation, we have a sustainable model. We have people like you.

If every person reading this chips in as little as $1/month, we can bring in more staff writers to join our parliamentary reporter and our labour beat writer, expand our plans for 2019 election coverage, and recruit more diverse writers across the country. Please donate now at rabble.ca/donate.

What have we done with the funds from previous fundraisers?

Well, here is just the tip of the iceberg. Over the past year we were able to:

And that’s just to name a few. See all about our work in our annual report(s).

2019 will be a big year for rabble. One that we’ve never felt more confident that we can take on, with a strong movement of mobilized readers by our side.

So, if you can put aside even $1 per month you will be making an important contribution to supporting our journalism.

If you can find the funds to support us at $5/month we are happy to send you a copy of Corporatizing Canada: Making Business Out Of Public Service. It’s just our way of saying thank you for being a friend to rabble.

If you’re able to donate even more at $8/month we’ll send you Corporatizing Canada and ALSO either the Reconciliation Manifesto, or Moving Against the System.

Why not add these to your holiday reading lists or as gifts to your friends and family?

And if you can’t find the means to support us financially, please do help us by encouraging your friends, family, and community to read rabble and by spreading the news of our campaign. Many hands make light work, and we know we can make our goals with your support.

Thanks for taking the time,
