Deepan Budlakoti is a Canadian citizen, born in Ottawa, who suddenly had his passport revoked by the Canadian government. The government has claimed that it issued Deepan’s passport “in error”. After serving time for criminal convictions, Deepan is now being threatened with deportation to a country he has never been to. Having been born and raised in Canada, the Indian government is unwilling to provide travel documents, making Deepan nationless.
This injustice sets a dangerous precedent for other folks living in Canada. When the government can arbitrarily strip citizens of their passports and threaten them with deportation, justice will never come to the Canadian Immigration system.
