This past Friday marked the one-year anniversary of the RCMP raid on the 134 encampment in Rexton, N.B., close to the Elsipogtog First Nation. I travelled to the memorial celebration called “One Water, One Earth: A Gathering to Honour All Protectors,” organized by Kopit Lodge in the Elsipogtog Community Hall’s Teepee Building.
Healing our spirit, strengthening our resistance was the theme for the event, which included a talking circle, drumming and speeches. There was also a potluck and entertainment into the evening, and a slideshow put together of things that have happened since last year, including of Maude Barlow’s visit as well as David Suzuki’s.

During the speeches we also learned that SWN may be pulling out of New Brunswick altogether! Which would be amazing news. Now to get Corridor out of Penobsquis, and all the other lease-owning shale gas companies to abandon as well… to allow the New Brunswick government to refocus on the transition away from fossil fuels and to sustainable, long-term jobs in our communities.
The first annual Elsipogtog Fishing Derby took place over the following two days, another event bringing the community closer together.
