For some campaigns, petitioning the government is just the way to go, especially if your campaign is reactionary to a piece of legislation or proposed bill. A great way to attract political attention is through a well crafted petition. Petitions submitted to Canadian legislatures have to follow strict guidelines. Each Canadian legislature has different guidelines for accepting petitions, and while some jurisdictions welcome online petitions others may require original signatures to be accepted.
It’s a common myth that a petition needs a certain about of signatures to get to the Legislature. It doesn’t matter how many signatures you get (although more is always better) as long as you make sure your petition is formatted correctly.
Before you do anything: know the guidelines required of your petition. Though there are differences depending on where you are, this guide makes them clear and easy to understand.
Once you know what you need to succeed, check out this guide by the Council of Canadians on how to organize a petition. It’s written for council members, but all the principles are the same:
Identify the problem
Keep your solutions short and to the point
Share it widely
