You can now add Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative party of Canada, to a growing list of international leaders and parties copying Trump and the MAGA movement.
The list includes. Jair Bolsonaro, former president of Brazil whom the people called Trumpinho or “little Trump”. Victor Orban, prime minister of Hungary, Giorgia Meloni prime minister of Italy, Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party in France, Rodrigo Duterte, former president of the Philippines, Romania’s George-Nicolae Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, Argentina’s president Javier Milei and the Allianz für Deutschland party in Germany.
The federal election campaign that was just witnessed in Canada, begs the question. Did the Conservatives hire US consultants? Hard to tell the difference between the Republican Party in the US and the Conservative Party of Canada
In 2024, the Conservatives could not resist playing identity politics.
We saw the sudden embrace of anti-trans policies by Poilievre and Conservative premiers across the country. The messaging put out by Conservative spin doctors was clearly meant to promote fear and intolerance towards trans people. Amnesty International denounced Conservative messaging as “dangerous.”
Let’s look at the promises made by Poilievre that the Conservative party supported during the election.
He promised to deport permanent residents accused of hate crimes with no due process. Promised to pull back funding from universities over their ideological slant and then promised to take action against Woke Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity (DEI) policies in the justice system and the armed forces. Then, in a photocopy of the 2024 Trump presidential campaign, Poilievre promised to cut foreign aid and “trim the bloated bureaucracy.”
Like Trump, the Conservatives are also very comfortable with the removal of all regulations regarding the environment and the climate crisis.
One of the biggest issues is just who is endorsing and supporting Poilievre and the Conservative Party of Canada?
In the US, the Christian right was instrumental in returning Trump to power. In order to become leader of the Conservatives, Poilievre required the votes and support of the Christian right here in Canada. The question is, what did Poilievre promise them in order to gain their support? Will women’s rights ever be safe with Pierre Poilievre as Prime Minister?
When you criticize the evangelical far-right you are accused of being anti-Christian or an atheist. This completely invented doctrine of Christian nationalism is a very big threat in the US and now a threat in Canada too. Invented religions have always been used by the far-right to gain power and control.
Poilievre has been praised by the far-right both here and in the US. Alex Jones, the main far-right conspiracy theorist in the US, praised Poilievre as the “real deal.” To date, Poilievre has not rejected or repudiated the endorsement by Alex Jones.
The Conservative party of Canada has also partnered with Action 4 Canada, a right-wing “heritage” organization.
Also heaping praise on Poilievre were right wingers Elon Musk, Ben Shapiro and bizarrely, Canadian Kevin O’Leary who thinks Canada should join the US.
The far-right is growing fast worldwide. Who has Poilievre been communicating with? Is this why Poilievre has steadfastly refused to get his security clearance? What is Poilievre hiding? How can anyone be trusted with the safety and security of Canadians when they are refusing to get security clearance?
The Conservative Party of Canada was okay with and supported all of that.
Damien Kurek, elected Conservative MP in Alberta stepped down so Poilievre can run in a by-election to return to the House of Commons as leader of the Opposition. Kurek said, “Pierre Poilievre just finished a remarkable national campaign that received the highest vote share since 1988. An unstoppable movement has grown under his leadership.”
This statement should be very alarming to all Canadians. Do we really want a movement in Canada that so closely resembles the Trump MAGA movement back in Parliament? This is a very dangerous pathway. It is a pathway used to enable the dismantling of democracy and the upwards transfer of wealth to the wealthy.
Again, copying Trump’s “common sense” policies the main Conservative policies are tax cuts, cutting red tape (deregulation) and privatization.
Time for the Conservative Party of Canada to start acting responsibly in the best interests of Canada. Replace Poilievre with a more rational and practical leader. Stop copying the Republican playbook and get off this very dangerous pathway. The sooner the better for a more democratic and stronger Canada.
