In this election Doug Ford claims he wants to fight Trump, but it is no mystery why Ford was 100 per cent happy Trump was elected. Ford acts and behaves in the same ways.
Authoritarian Ford has installed loyalists at every government tribunal and agency.
In columns, the Hamilton Spectator has reported on Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) decisions including the damning September 20, 2022 edition where, The Spectator reported that 97 per cent of dispute decisions by the OLT were decided in favour of developers. In every OLT decision since then, looking at the record across the region again, almost 100 per cent was decided in favour of developers.
It is the same situation across Ontario. It is now just about a virtual certainty that the (OLT) will rule in favour of developers. The chair of the OLT is a Ford loyalist.
The book Against the People: How Ford Nation is Dismantling Ontario chronicles Ford’s stacking of the OLT.
“Six of the nine senior chairs at Tribunals Ontario have either donated money to, served as a high-ranking staffer for or ran for political office as a Conservative,” the book reads.
It is vital that the public is confident that tribunal adjudicators will make decisions based on the evidence, not on the interests of the government that appointed them.” That is not the case now.
“It is the same at tribunals like the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and the Landlord and Tenant Board. Both have reduced and restricted accessibility while huge backlogs grow and cases are dismissed by these loyalists without even notifying complainants. These loyalists are given the power to make final decisions affecting everyday people in Ontario,” reads another excerpt from the book.
If you expect a fair hearing do not expect one in Ford’s Ontario. In addition to the installation of loyalists, like Trump, Ford is deliberately dismantling democracy in Ontario. Ford has continuously used his legislation to change laws and regulations to the benefit of corporate Ontario.
Ford’s quest for authoritarian power is shown by his concentration of power in the Premier’s office. By severely reducing parliamentary scrutiny with omnibus legislation, reduced time allocation and invoking closure, he has allowed the government to conclude debate and force a vote on any matter.
Against the People: How Ford Nation is Dismantling Ontario shows prime examples of how Ford is dismantling democracy.
The prime example is “Omnibus Bill 57 [which] made changes to fifty-six existing laws affecting almost every government department. Bill 57 also eliminated three offices of the legislature, The Ontario Child advocate, the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario and The French language services commissioner,” the book reads.
Ford has falsely claimed he has made record investments in healthcare and education. The fact of the matter is Ford has starved healthcare to the point of collapse, so he can present privatization as the solution. The only records Ford has broken is Premier Mike Harris’s record of transferring wealth to the wealthy.
If Ford is elected again, He will continue to transfer wealth to the wealthy and dismantle democracy in favour of his rich friends. Just like his hero Trump.
