Dear rabble readers, 

Parliament in Ottawa is on its summer break, as are the provincial legislatures across the country. But while the politicians reconnect with their constituents and recharge, rabble.ca will still be at work covering politics and public policy from the point of view of what it all means for grassroots Canadians.

Since its inception, rabble has taken the position that politics is a lot more than a horse race, calibrated and measured by incessant opinion polls.

We think competitive sports are great – nothing can beat a hard-fought soccer match or play- off hockey game – but we refuse to succumb to the idea that politics is nothing but a sport, in which we are all no more than spectators.

Political decisions have an impact on our rights, our access to justice, and our prosperity and that of our society.

Politics influence the issues which matter to all of us: our health care, our children’s education, our tax system, our warming planet, our capacity to tell each other our stories, justice for Indigenous peoples, the right of women to control their own bodies, the rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ Canadians and the future of our towns and cities.

Politics is not a game, much as some in the media might sometimes treat it as one.

And access to these stories is crucial.

That is what we have always done, and we will not stop.
