In the US election, voters ignored the many alarming warning signs and elected   Donald Trump. Alarming warning signs are flashing red on Pierre Poilievre’s attempt to be prime minister.

Every day there seems to be a new red flag raised. Poilievre is not just a lot like Trump. His policies are exactly the same as Trump’s, catering to his Trump like base.

In the last few days of the campaign, he has made some very chilling and alarming promises. He has promised to pull back funding from universities over their ideological slant and to take action against the so-called “woke” justice system and “wokeness” in the armed forces, and just about everywhere else.

He refuses to say what “woke” is but it is clear that just like Trump he means to get rid of Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness everywhere he can. Educators are very worried about the spread of anti-intellectualism driven by the Trump administration coming here.

Poilievre also recently announced a plan to deport permanent residents under the pretense of accused hate crimes. Poilievre like Trump is deliberately blurring the lines between hate crimes and free speech, undermining due process in the legal system all for political advantage and like trump using fear as an organizing tool. He is doing this to pander to  the Zionist community to instill fear in  those protesting against the slaughter of women and children in Gaza, Poilievre wants to sidestep due process allowing government to target people protesting logging in protected areas, pipelines or any protestor at all that the government doesn’t like.

This shows that at his core Pierre Poilievre is an authoritarian. Again, exactly like     Trump, Poilievre is promising to cut foreign aid and “trim the bloated” bureaucracy without massive layoffs. Promising $70 billion in tax cuts shows that statement doesn’t quite ring true.

In election after election, Conservatives give a barebones platform very short on critical details, then get elected and the do things like privatization with no mandate from the people while at the same time undoing many laws and regulations that were put there to protect people against the vagaries and excesses of the free market system.  These regulations are seen by their corporate supporters as an impediment to profit making, but are in fact aimed at curtailing the worst impacts of unrestrained capitalism. For example, the climate crisis.

Every day it seems the list of climate disasters grows and grows. The climate crisis is a real threat, one that Conservatives country wide prefers to ignore. Poilievre’s plan to deal with the climate crisis is, the same as  Conservative premiers Doug Ford and Danielle Smith, cut more red tape enabling more profits. The climate crisis has been pushed off the stage by Trump, who is also making the crisis much worse.

There are two questions Poilievre must answer before voting day. In the US, the Christian right was instrumental in returning Trump to power. In order to become leader of the Conservatives, Poilievre required the votes and support of the Christian right here in Canada. The question is: what did Poilievre promise them in order to gain their support?

In a time of crisis and danger to the country how can you be trusted with the safety and security of Canadians when you are refusing to get your security clearance? Mr. Poilievre, why are you refusing to get your security clearance?

Like Trump, Poilievre calls reporters who criticize him, “The fake news media.” Poilievre’s plan to dismantle the CBC should alarm everyone. For many in the north CBC radio and TV is their only media source. A properly funded public broadcaster is also critical to our nation’s democratic health. Let’s not forget Poilievre with his “Canada first” and Trump’s “common sense” slogans. Clearly a very dangerous man, with authoritarian views intent on a dangerous pathway for Canada. On closer inspection, we must not ignore the fact that there are just too many alarming red flags to vote for Poilievre.
