Traditional news media has its problems. That has been well established by now. I see fewer and fewer ideas being discussed by a shrinking pool of journalists writing more about symptoms rather than systems and even less about solutions. Media is too often shallow, sensationalistic and overwhelmingly negative. Let’s be frank, there is a crisis in media in this country with too much concentration and too few voices and options. But crises also present us with opportunities to innovate and create solutions. This is why I helped found rabble.ca, and encourage you to support rabble’s independent media.

I’ve often felt frustration at the way the world is, but it has also helped me envision all that it can be. It’s why I have been a part of the launch of 15 social start-ups and became the founding CEO of the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI), and why CSI is currently exploring the development of the Solutions Media Accelerator to support solutions journalists and media startups interested in covering the responses to the issues we face rather than just the problems.

It’s why 15 years ago, I helped co-found rabble.ca with Judy Rebick and a cohort of many other talented activists, entrepreneurs and web enthusiasts. We rolled up our sleeves, got to work, and created the first online, national, alternative media in Canada. We channeled our frustration into action. You can do the same.

When we founded rabble.ca we were on a mission to create the platform for people to demand a better world, and now we have a space for sharing the views that mainstream media ignores or misrepresents. This small corner of the Internet is ours — all of ours — to use and grow together.

On rabble’s 15th anniversary, do something to support independent media in this country. Get involved. There is no better time to make a donation to rabble.ca than right now.
