Hamilton crowd gathers to protest Ford’s Greenbelt development

On Nov. 13, 2022, hundreds of Hamiltonians gathered along York Blvd. in Hamilton, Ont. to protest the Ford government’s decision to tear up the Greenbelt for development, reverse the City’s decision to protect the urban boundary, neuter conversation authorities and make things easier for developers and worse for the planet. Wayne MacPhail spoke to protestors about why they oppose this development.

Last week, contributor Doreen Nicoll also covered the Ford government’s decision to develop the Greenbelt. She wrote:

“The Greenbelt was supposed to be permanent allowing farmers and land owners to maintain their property long-term, to maintain wetlands and woodlands, to continue building the soil knowing ecological investments would have long-term value.

Opening the Greenbelt for development is tantamount to painting a target on every piece of that land. It becomes cash crop land that’s managed in a way that destroys the property and the environmental values of the property.”
