This is a really interesting petition calling on the Bank of Canada to add images of historic female Canadians to our $5 or $10 or $20 bills – any bank note would be an improvement! That’s because the Famous 5 were removed from the $50 bill when its plastic replacement was designed. Now the $50 features a big, icebreaking ship.
As the petition says, “who and what is celebrated on our bank notes matters, as it reflects what we consider important in our culture and history and who we consider worthy of honouring for achievement.” This is one of the everyday, subtle ways that sexism and discrimination against women permeate aspects of Canadian society, and it’s important to stand up and say an all-male history (represented in an all-male line up of historical figures on our money) is unacceptable.
